I Am My Mothers Daughter Professor Ramos Blog

I Am My Mothers Daughter Nick White English 101 Prof. Ramos I am my Mothers Daughter Everyone who reads â€Å"Never Marry a Mexican† is very quick to look down on the main character Clemencia for her choices but I dont think it’s that easy. I think that she became who she was taught to be and who she learned to be. This could be from her parents, her siblings or maybe even a trusted teacher. This girl did go through some pretty traumatic stuff when she was younger so it is no surprise that she became the woman she became. From a young age Clemencia’s mother told her â€Å"never marry a mexican† because she did and he was very traditional. He was born and raised in Mexico while she was born and raised in the United States but in a mexican household. Even though they were both mexican and taught mexican culture they were taught it differently. From day one the relationship was not sound, they would always feel like the other ones beliefs were wrong so to try and protect her daughter she just told her to never marry a mexican so she wouldnt have to deal with the same struggle. Clemencia was raised being told to basically abandon her culture and just go for a rich white guy to support her. Her mother was also un loyal to her husband so again Clemencia is learning these negative things from her mother which will stick with her her whole life. Even worse, her mother cheated on her husband while he was sick and in the hospital which would have a very strong impact on Clemencia as she had alway s connected with her father more than her mother so after hearing what her mother did it drove a wedge even farther in the family. Then to add insult to injury the mom then married and children with the man she was having an affair with. What mother could put her children through all that? Now saying her mother made her the way she is isnt fair because Clemencia does acknowledge the fact that what she is doing is wrong but she also says that she saw what marriage did nothing for her mother and father so why does she need to get married? Her mother did love and care for Clemencia and her siblings but her mother also taught her terrible things and those terrible things followed clemencia throughout her whole life. It would be unfair to put all the blame on the mother though because in the book Clemencia keeps dating men that are married but she couldnt do that if married men didnt go looking for new woman. We usually blame women for being the homewrecker and ruining the relationship but what about the man who had an equal part in bringing that girl into all this? In the story the main male character is named Drew and he was married but also clemencias teacher. The two of them ended up dating and on the day of drew’s child being born drew was back at home with Clemencia in Drews bed. This is almost exactly what Clemencias mother did to her husband, she left him in his time of need to be with someone else. Drew does actually eventually end up leaving his wifr and taking the kid after actually introducing Clemencia to his wife to really hit home that their dirt bags. None of this would have happened if Clemencia never got together with Drew but Drew made a conscious effort to keep pursuin g Clemencia and to keep their relationship a secret from his wife so its both their fault not just her. Maybe there is just some thrill they got sneaking around that made them keep going, they knew it was wrong but the rush they got from trying to hide it was more important. It’s like skydiving or surfing, it’s scary, fun and dangerous because at any moment the whole thing could go wrong and everything comes crumbling down around them. So maybe this whole thing wasnt love it was just chasing the forbidden fruit, it was taking the thing you’re not supposed to have just because you can. So can you really blame them? Everyone has taken a cookie out of the cookie jar without asking. Everyone is so quick to blame the girl for cheating but so many other factors play into it all. I personally find Clemencia to be a very deep and complex character who could easily be overlooked once you finish the story. But she allows us to look at ourselves and society as a whole and really see how we view the roles and dynamics of men vs women.

Social Psychology Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Social Psychology - Essay Example taurant and hotel management about it, because he was my friend and I didn’t want to compromise our friendship and working unity over something like this, I didn’t say anything. Another time, I also took food from the cafeteria, along with P.M. He took most of it, but I kept a couple of sodas. The third time, I stole three steaks on my own. I think I wouldn’t have finally been fired for stealing, if I had done the right thing and reported P.M. This itself could be considered counter-factual thinking, though, because it is not rationally based: the past happened, and I cannot go back and change it, to make it fictional. I also saw these events with P.M. as being progressive and related to each other, but counter-factually, this could mean I was just ascribing meaning to them which they didn’t really have. B-Some psychologists suggest you can reduce cognitive dissonance by restoring positive self-evaluations that are threatened by the dissonance. Elliot and Devine (1994) refer to this as self-affirmation. Give an example of a time in your life when you reduced an unpleasant internal state in some self-affirming way. One time, I was able to overcome a bad situation in my life in a self-affirming way, using my sense of morality. I wanted to list examples of their morality may be more prone to give an accounting of their personal beliefs than what they see to be a proscribed function of weighing behavior by a set standard. â€Å"An affirmation is more effective when stated in the present tense. For example; "I now have a wonderful job." Avoid affirming something in the future tense, e.g. "I am going to have a wonderful job" or the results will always be waiting to happen† (Self, 2010). Therefore, ethics is perhaps a better measure of district leadership practice than morality, as it is seen as being less intertwined with belief systems than it is with more generalized (good or bad) behavior in relation to oneself and others. Like morality, ethics are

Paper and Coin currency Vs Electronic Money Transfer Systems Essay

Paper and Coin currency Vs Electronic Money Transfer Systems - Essay Example Bill Gates, while delivering his lecture at International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas (Nevada) in January this year, said "Software is providing power, but software has got to provide simplicity. And that's why our investment levels are going up in the toughest problems: Security, privacy, speech recognition, video recognition - and all of those things we will fold into this platform."1 1. Today we are in an IT era and wish to live in a Digital life-style. Being digital has become sort of a fashion statement. The older generation expresses its reservation regarding security issues etc. but the Gen-X is fully geared up to exploit the full potential of Digital age. Well, having said about the 'attitude', it certainly needs to be pointed out that the youth of the day is not as carefree as is being branded, at times, by the elders. The fact is, the technologies like Electronic Money Transfer or Electronic Funds Transfer have proved their utility beyond doubt and we believe in this capability because we understand the intricacies of this technology. Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) provides for electronic payments and collections. Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) provides for electronic payments and collections. It is a system of transferring money from one bank account directly to another without any paper money changing hands e.g. Using Internet or bank transfers. Using ATM/Debit/Credit Cards etc Payments thorough telephone (using voice synthesizers) In fact the Radio Frequency IDs (RFID) technique is also used in Electronic Transfer. RFID tags are used in a wide range of contexts like; Electronic payment cards used in many countries to pay road tolls, bus and metro fares, Electronic security tags used by retailers, 'Intelligent' luggage labels used in some airports etc Monitoring the workers within the factory/ company builiding. Advantages of Using Electronic Money Transfer Salary of an employee can be directly deposited in his/ her bank account. There's will be more transparency in money transfers. For example transfer of huge sums of money to illegal operations like financing the terrorist organizations can now be easily traced, as there will be less number of manual transactions. Money can be transferred in lesser time, usually the same day. It increases the efficiency, safety/ security standards of the bank. Such transfers are less expansive for the bank. Customer is free from the stress of carrying bundles of notes in a bag/ packets etc. hence reducing the threat of robbery. The threat of a 'Returned Check' is gone as well. It results in less paper work meaning less cutting of trees i.e. an environment friendly technique. The day is not far when we do not need to carry any wallet, Credit cards etc. in our pocket, Soon enough we may see the times when we'll have all our banking records, personal details, identification tags etc in a smart chip embedded in the ring of our middle

In time of war, actions not morally acceptable become acceptable Essay Example for Free

In time of war, actions not morally acceptable become acceptable Essay We live in an imperfect world where human interactions breeds frictions occasioned by participation of different individuals in matters of society, economics and even religious inclinations of the different masses. Human beings have voluntarily or involuntarily found themselves in different areas of life due to their races or ideologies and consequently have had to act in line with a certain set of belief. Therefore this has bred differences in how a different society approaches issues relating to both governance and interaction and lack of consensus among individuals and sometimes groups within and without have led to violence. This violence is sometimes political and involves a set of organized military groups fighting for a certain goal that is usually political in nature. War is rough on the participants and mostly on innocent civilians caught in the middle of the chaos. The questions that strongly begs a just answer is â€Å"can there be a just war. † Hedge (2002) claims that in essence there is not much difference between the U S government and Alqueda arguing that despite what motives drives them to violence both the outcome is death of innocent civilians. However there are those who feel that to agree with Hedge would be to deny that there cannot be moral reasons to go to war and that the presuppositions behind the just war theory are fallacious and misguiding. In this regard it would be equal to agreeing that no reason should drive a country to wage war on another or even that terror groups must be allowed to exploit the weakness of less able nations in order to bring terror to perceived enemies. In my opinion such a stand is untenable and unrealistic and a way to avoid taking responsibility in accordance to the natural laws of justice that guarantees freedom and rights of individuals (Zupan, 2004). It is therefore important to highlight that it is hypocritical to deny that a party might be justified to wage war to counter similar aggressiveness or as way of stopping gross violations against fellow human beings. All human beings have a right to life is a clearly accepted fact and anything that contravenes such a fact would ordinarily be considered immoral and against fundamental pillars of justice, rights and freedoms. However whereby a war has been taken as to being justified then a waiver is taken in order to grant the involved parties the right to take away the lives of those perceived to be the enemies. In addition the loss of civilian life in the course of such a war is simply taken to be the costs of bringing such changes as necessitate that war. Hedge actually accuses Washington of stooping so low as to use death as a means of expressing its dissatisfaction with certain issues (Hedge, 2002). In other wars certain groups of people who previously viewed as morally incorrect might receive a change of perceptions simply because they direct their atrocities to the perceived enemy. In this regard the common phrase that an enemy of my enemy is my enemy becomes true. There are those who would argue for the sovereignty of nations and that a state has a right from external interference. In ordinary times such a status applies and there are clear efforts to observe and even promote the status quo. However in times of war sovereign borders are breached and this usually leads to the removal of leadership or occupation of such state. Hedge (2002) however seeks to point out that while he is not a war supporter, that it is sometimes important to use force to counter a force that is much immoral as compared to the countering force. It is therefore important then that we must understand that we have a moral responsibility to take care not to ignore or indeed breach the fundamental rights of citizens as we engage in war. PC Vs Mac Essay -- Compare Contrast Personal Computer Macintosh

When purchasing a personal computer, buyers used to grapple with the decision: a Macintosh from Apple Computer or a Microsoft-based PC? Microsoft effectively won that operating system debate years ago and claims more than 90% of the PC operating system market. But in the push to legally sell digital music, Apple and Microsoft, and their incompatible file formats, are at it again. Consumers are in the position of having to choose as hardware makers line up behind either Microsoft or Apple's software format. Hewlett-Packard's recent surprise decision to snub longtime PC partner Microsoft and offer Apple music software on its PCs shows how unpredictable this battle may be. "Microsoft lost the first round of the digital music war," says Phil Leigh, an analyst with research firm Inside Digital Media. Apple's iTunes software "was good enough to persuade (H-P) . . . to switch. That's huge." For now, Dell, which battles H-P for PC market share dominance, promotes music in Microsoft's Windows Media Audio (WMA) format on its computers -- as do most Windows-based PCs. Likewise, most portable music devices sold today -- with the exception of Apple's best-selling and acclaimed iPod -- use Microsoft's format. That means consumers who use portable music players and buy songs from Apple must use the iPod; consumers who purchase from non-Apple online music stores must use portable devices based on Microsoft's format. Adding to the digital disorder: Sony is set this summer to launch yet another music service, Connect, with songs that can be transferred only to Sony devices, such as mini-disc players. "There's a lot of confusion about different formats," says Mike McGuire, analyst with research firm GartnerG2. "But the dig... ...with Pepsi of 100 million songs from iTunes. Will other PC manufacturers follow in H-P's footsteps? Leigh thinks so; Apple wouldn't comment. Only time will tell. Consumers "will decide which format works, and whether that should be Apple's or Microsoft's," McGuire says. Bio-cosmetics in the 20th Century: The Response to the Revolution

In this rapidly-changing environment, one has to keep phase with the developments in the patterns of consumer purchasing behavior, currently of varying degrees and categories, especially if one is in the field of marketing. The tastes and preferences of the consumers, which we also aptly call as the market demand, is what fuels marketing.   The capacity of a company or a firm to determine early-on the demand of the market of responsibility is of an advantage.   At the same time, meeting this specific demand will complete the formula to success; otherwise, the extensive marketing research will all be put to waste.Change is everything especially when the universe entered the stage of globalization, where markets across regions face issues of product customization or adaptations according to the needs of the target segments.   Exploring further unto this topic will be the main core of this paper which will particularly tackle the status and the progress made by the Bio-cosmetics in dustry in the 20th century, and how the market has reacted or is reacting to it.The subject of discussion will delve into the evolution of this trade or field of commerce and what has been the efforts conducted by the involved companies in strengthening their core competencies for survival and competitiveness. As previously mentioned, the behavior of the target market will be analyzed thoroughly in this paper by demonstrating the qualitative and quantitative aspects of the factors at play.   In so doing, it is aimed that the stability of the bio-cosmetics industry be determined and that the prospects for future possible ventures be identified.   This consumer behavior study will enable the marketers to garner feedback on this side of the cosmetics industry and leverage on the potential of the business, vis-à  -vis the key market segments with strong demand for the bio-cosmetics line of products and services.Theory and Practices of NegotiationDefinitionWhen you hear the word nego tiation, what comes first to mind?   Negotiation is almost always an everyday transaction being dealt with by each and every one of us.   Indeed, how often do you negotiate – often, seldom, or never?Everything in life is negotiated, under all conditions, at all times: from asking your parents to bring you to the shopping malls to take out the morning garbage to driving in the express lane in rush-hour traffic, from determining what time to schedule an appointment with a client to deciding which tv show to watch with your family—to some extent, every facet of life is linked with one’s using of negotiation.Negotiation occurs â€Å"whenever people exchange ideas with the intention of changing relationships or whenever they confer for agreement.†Ã‚   Another definition expanding slightly the above meaning of negotiation is to note that â€Å"negotiation is conducted neither to widen nor to breach the relationship, but to form a new or different configura tion.†Ã‚  Ã‚   In short, most of us are constantly involved in negotiations to one degree or another for a good part of any given day. Negotiation should be considered as a positive way of structuring the communication process. It is usually more than helpful in one’s work environment and in closing deals with new clients or prospects.   Win-win negotiation skills are assets to a company especially if you will be in-charge of marketing new and pioneer products to the market.Effective negotiation helps you to resolve situations where what you want conflicts with what someone else wants. The aim of win-win negotiation is to find a solution that is acceptable to both parties, and leaves both parties feeling that they've won, in some way, after the event.Preparing for a successful negotiation†¦Depending on the scale of the disagreement, some preparation may be appropriate for conducting a successful negotiation.   For small disagreements, excessive preparation can b e counter-productive because it takes time that is better used elsewhere. It can also be seen as manipulative because, just as it strengthens your position, it can weaken the other person’s.However, if you need to resolve a major disagreement, and then make sure you prepare thoroughly. Using our free worksheet, think through the following points before you start negotiating:Goals: what do you want to get out of the negotiation? What do you think the other person wants?Trades: What do you and the other person have that you can trade? What do you each have that the other wants? What are you each comfortable giving away?Alternatives: if you don’t reach agreement with the other person, what alternatives do you have? Are these good or bad? How much does it matter if you do not reach agreement? Does failure to reach an agreement cut you out of future opportunities? And what alternatives might the other person have?Relationships: what is the history of the relationship? Could or should this history impact the negotiation? Will there be any hidden issues that may influence the negotiation? How will you handle these?Expected outcomes: what outcome will people be expecting from this negotiation? What has the outcome been in the past, and what precedents have been set?The consequences: what are the consequences for you of winning or losing this negotiation? What are the consequences for the other person?Power: who has what power in the relationship? Who controls resources? Who stands to lose the most if agreement isn’t reached? What power does the other person have to deliver what you hope for?Possible solutions: based on all of the considerations, what possible compromises might there be?Negotiating successfully†¦The negotiation itself is a careful exploration of your position and the other person’s position, with the goal of finding a mutually acceptable compromise that gives you both as much of what you want as possible. People's posit ions are rarely as fundamentally opposed as they may initially appear – the other person may have very different goals from the ones you expect! In an ideal situation, you will find that the other person wants what you are prepared to trade, and that you are prepared to give what the other person wants. If this is not the case and one person must give way, then it is fair for this person to try to negotiate some form of compensation for doing so – the scale of this compensation will often depend on the many of the factors we discussed above. Ultimately, both sides should feel comfortable with the final solution if the agreement is to be considered win-win. Only consider win-lose negotiation if you don't need to have an ongoing relationship with the other party as, having lost, they are unlikely to want to work with you again. Equally, you should expect that if they need to fulfill some part of a deal in which you have â€Å"won,† they may be uncooperative and legalistic about the way they do this.Facets of NegotiationNegotiation is a peaceable procedure for reconciling, and/or compromising known differences. It is the antithesis of force and violence. A negotiation will be fruitful or completely meaningless, depending upon the existence of two essential elements. There are other less important elements, but two are absolutely essential – Good faith and flexibility.   Both must be present on both sides of the table—one without the other on either side is a fatal defect.Good faith and flexibility cover many facets. By good faith is meant an honest desire to reach agreement on the differences which exist through com promise and a realization that the agreement thus reached should be fair and reasonable for both sides, if the agreement is to endure.   A negotiation must not be viewed as an adversary proceeding, such as a case in court, where one party wins and the other loses. The existence or non-existence of good faith is sometimes difficult to determine with assurance, but there will come a time when a good negotiator will be able to tell if this essential element is missing.   The second essential element of flexibility is the heart of a negotiation. In every negotiation it must be assumed—unless you are dealing with juveniles—that your opposite numbers will always table maximum positions first. Equally important, it must be assumed—unless you are dealing with fools—that your opposite numbers have not disclosed their minimum positions in any manner. The challenge to the able negotiator, therefore, is to start with the tabled maximum positions and by skillfully using all of the tools in his kit, reach the essence or basic minimum positions upon which an agreement can and should be concluded. If a negotiator is unable to obtain any concessions whatsoever from the tabled positions, then either the element of flexibility is missing or the negotiator is inept, in which event you find yourself with no negotiation at all. As in the case of good faith, it may be difficult and time consuming to convince yourself that what you are facing is a set of non-negotiable demands, but here again a good negotiator will see the handwriting on the wall and eventually realize just the situation he is in.   The crucial and delicate decision to be made by the negotiator is—are his opponents still negotiating for advantage or is their position truly flexible, as it appears to be?Thus, it is somewhat naà ¯ve to take the position that you will not negotiate on known differences until the other side has given assurances, satisfactory to you, and prior to the negotiations, that the negotiable positions are such that an agreement can be reached. If the negotiator eventually concludes that these essential elements do not exist, he must proceed to make the record clear for all to see and suspend the so-called negotiations, in a manner which unmistakably places the onus on the non-negotiating party.Processes of NegotiationIn simplest terms, negotiation is a discussion between two or more disputants who are trying to work out a solution to their problem.   Negotiations typically take place because the parties wish to create something new that neither could do on his or her own, or to resolve a problem or dispute between them.   The parties acknowledge that there is some conflict of interest between them and think they can use some form of influence to get a better deal, rather than simply taking what the other side will voluntarily give them.

Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms

Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms Section 8: Search or seizure Everyone has the right to be secure against unreasonable search or seizure. The first part of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms that we choose for our project is section 8: Search and Seizure. This section guarantees that everyone has the right to be secure against unreasonable search and seizure. There are two parts to this section, one being unreasonable search and the other being unreasonable seizure.Unreasonable search is when your property, belongings, body, is searched without a warrant or without a probable reasoning to believe that the person would need to be searched. Unreasonable seizure is different; it implies that a person’s belongings have been taken from them by a public authority without the persons consent. Many government activities fall under this law, in all the law helps to secure people’s rights to privacy and it keeps government officials from abusing their power . Many may wonder why search and seizure are under the same section. The reason why they are is because they often fall hand and hand. Seizure often only occurs following a search, and searches only occur for the reasoning of wanting to seizure the person’s illegal belongings. There are many cases of unreasonable search and seizures which exist. For example, if government officials were to go into a man’s house, whom they suspected of dealing Mariana, but didn’t have a good reason to believe so or a warrant, and had taken his illegal Mariana plants then that would be an example of unreasonable search and seizure.Another example of unreasonable search and seizure would be if police officers were to inspect a person’s car at a traffic stop and take belonging inside because they believe they were illegal possessions; this is unreasonable search and seizure because they did not have a good reason to search. Many argue about this right of protection against unr easonable search and seizure because the possessions, weather found reasonably or not, are illegal. Some think that it is the governments right to search belongings of its citizens. An example of this opposition to the rights of Canadians currently occurring in Canada is Bill C-30. Bill C-30 would force Internet Service Providers to give Government Officials your name, address, IP address and a lot of other personal information, without a warrant. With all this information, the government would be empowered with the ability to monitor every action that you make online and use it to catch any illegal activity. This is a complete compromise to the rights of Canadians to protection against unreasonable search and seizure.

Transformational Leadership Essay Essay Example

Transformational Leadership Essay Essay Example Transformational Leadership Essay Paper Transformational Leadership Essay Paper Transformational leading. as a construct. has been present and used with leaders all over the universe as far back as history records. This manner of leading has been cardinal to several leading techniques. research articles. and books for an drawn-out history. Transformational leading developed as a vocabulary term when it was foremost introduced by James MacGregor Burns in his book. Leadership ( Burns. 1978 ) . Burns compares the relationship between the leader and the followings with the footings transformational or transactional ( Burns. 1978 ) . Harmonizing to Burns. in a transformational leading relationship. the leader raises the motive of the followings and this consequences in animating and elating the relationship in order to carry through a common end ( Burns. 1978 ) . Burns compares the transformational leader with what he calls the transactional leader. The footings that are factual about a transactional leader are the opposite compared to transformational leaders in man y ways. Burns ( 1978 ) . points out that the biggest differences between the two types of leader features are the intent of the relationship between the leader and followings and the intent of the leaders function and petitions. Transformational leading consequences with both parties heightening their motivational focal point and desires to carry through common ends ; transactional leading. on the other manus. consequences in a dealing comprised of a petition or demand from the important power and ends when the dealing has been complete by the worker. Throughout the old ages. transformational leading has been revised and revamped with research. Pielstick lists seven major subjects that have been consistent in depicting the undertakings that transformational leaders attempt to carry through: â€Å"creating a shared vision. pass oning it. constructing relationships. developing a civilization. steering execution. exhibiting character. and accomplishing consequences ( Pielstick. 1998. p. 1 ) . Leaderships can travel from a dealing leading function to a transmutation leading function by being magnetic to followings in order to animate. run into the emotional demandsof the followings. or â€Å"they may intellectually excite employees† ( Bass. 1990. p. 21 ) . In their book Transformational Leaders ( 2007 ) . Bass and Riggio make the claim that an person does non hold to be at the top of a concern in order to be a transformational leader. These writers province that â€Å"leadership can happen at all degrees and by any individual† ( Bass A ; Riggio. 2007. p. 2 ) and this is the nucleus to transformational leaders. Transformational leaders. lead others to carry through more than what was originally expected and typically beyond what was original idea possible ( Bass A ; Riggio. 2007 ) . This is possible because the leader pays attending to the demands of persons. trains the people below them to go leaders themselves. and empowers each individual along the manner ( Bass A ; Riggio. 2007 ) . As Antonakis combines the footings transformational and magnetic and uses the two footings interchangeably ( 2011 ) Bass and Riggio province that â€Å"charisma is merely portion of transformational leading ( 2007. p. 5 ) . Many research workers have debated whether transformational leaders must be leaders that produce positive alteration or whether leaders that produce alteration for destructive intents. for illustration Hitler. are besides considered transformational leaders. Bass and Riggio ( 2007 ) clear up that for the intents of their book a transformational leader is one that brings about alteration that is positive and completed for unselfish grounds. The MLQ. multifactor leading questionnaire. was foremost published by Dr. Bernard Bass and is considered the benchmark step of transformational leading. This MLQ step has been revised over the old ages and now comes in a short or long version ( MLQ International. 2008 ) . The constituents that comprise a transformational leader can be scored by utilizing the MLQ tool. Each of the inquiries from this tool refers to one of four constituents of transformational leading: Idealized influence. inspirational motive. rational stimulation. and individualised consideration ( Mindgarden ) . Idealized influence is evident when leaders are function theoretical accounts for their followings ( Bass A ; Riggio. 2007 ) . Transformational leaders show features that align with inspirational motive by supplying significance and challenge that consequence in motivation and animating those around them ( Bass A ; Riggio. 2007 ) . Transformational leaders stimulate the intelligence of their followings by â€Å"questioning premises. reframing jobs. and nearing old state of affairss in new ways ( Bass A ; Riggio. 2007. p. 7 ) . The 4th constituent. single consideration. is represented by transformational leaders when they act as managers or wise mans to their followings by supplying the information and arrangement that is needed on an single degree ( Bass A ; Riggio. 2007 ) . DenHartog A ; Koopman convey up the point that â€Å"transformational leading can be viewed as a particular instance of transactional leading. in every bit much as both attacks are linked to the accomplishment of some end or nonsubjective ( DenHartog A ; Koopman. 2011. p. 176 ) . Den Hartog and Koopman ( 2011 ) . supply a tabular array. Table 9. 2 Trends in Leadership Theory and Research ( p. 168 ) that gives the historical position of leading theories with a brief description of each. The ‘trait’ attack was considered to hold a period of clip up to the late 1940’s and is characterized by the impression that â€Å"leaders are born† and â€Å"leadership is an unconditioned ability ( DenHartog A ; Koopman. 2011. p. 168 ) . This belief is that leading is a trait that you are either born with or without ; it can non be taught or developed in others. The ‘style’ attack has a day of the month scope from the late 1940’s to the late 1960â⠂¬â„¢s and demonstrates traits that emphasize â€Å"effectiveness has to make with how the leader behaves ( DenHartog A ; Koopman. 2011. p. 168 ) . From the 1960’s to the 1990’s the tendency was based on the eventuality attack ; â€Å"the effectivity of leading is affected by the situation/context ( DenHartog A ; Koopman. 2011. p. 168 ) . The last attack listed on the tabular array is the New Leadership attack which includes magnetic and transformational leading manners. New leading provinces that leaders â€Å"need vision and inspire trueness and emotional fond regard ( DenHartog A ; Koopman. 2011. p. 168 ) . During this last phase. new leading. leaders were now described as leaders as opposed to directors. This last phase is opposite to the first in that this leading trait is non something you are needfully born with. yet it can be something that is taught. William Brown and Douglas May wanted to research the effects of transformational leading preparation to find if traits that align with this leading manner can be taught and consequence in a positive result. In their research. The efficaciousness of transfo rmational leading preparation. one of the three major findings was that â€Å"an intensive twelvemonth long transformational leading development and preparation plan resulted in important additions in contingent wages and transformational leading behaviours among first-line supervisors† ( May A ; Brown. 2012 ) . John Antonakis combines the footings transformational leader and magnetic leader in chapter 8 of the book The Nature of Leadership ( 2011 ) . Throughout the chapter. Antonakis compares several different researchers’ positions and theories as they relate to these types of leading traits. Anonakis. nevertheless. brings a different challenge to the thought that transformational and magnetic leading traits are the existent causes that can convey approximately positive alteration in the people surrounded by the leaders that have these traits. He does non disregard the fact that these traits could convey about the alterations seen ; nevertheless. he calls for research workers to carry on longitudinal surveies which â€Å"establishes that transformational leaders have the ability to really transform persons and organizations† ( Day A ; Antonakis. 2011. p. 280 ) . He so challenges research workers to happen the â€Å"empirical evidence† necessary in order to do the dire ct connexion between specific transformational leading traits and positive additions ( Day A ; Antonakis. 2011. p. 280 ) . Not all research workers are roll uping information that reveals positive consequences stemming from transformational leaders in topographic point. Kotlyar and Karakowsky ( 2007 ) propose that transformational leading traits have a possible nexus to heightening dysfunctional squad struggle ( Kotlyar A ; Karakowsky. 2007 ) . Boerner and Eisenbeiss ( 2008 ) . research to happen the consequence of transformational leading manners on worker dependence and creativeness. Their research suggests that though many positive consequences are yielded when a leader has transformational leading traits. there are besides negative effects that follow. Initially the creativeness from workers will increase every bit good as the over dependence workers have on leaders with transformational leading traits ( Boerner A ; Eisenbeiss. 2008 ) . This dependence so leads to a diminution in worker creativeness harmonizing to their research ( Boerner A ; Eisnbeiss. 2008 ) . In decision. transformational leading traits and manners are critical facets that are a portion of successful leaders. Further research is needed in this field in order to give this country the cogency needed to show a strong instance. Further research is besides needed to set up any connexions between transformational leading qualities and any possible negative results over drawn-out periods of clip. MentionsBass. B. M. ( 1990 ) . Letter Writing 101

Letter Writing 101 Letter Writing 101 Letter Writing 101 By Ali Hale People have been writing letters for centuries. Before the telephone and the Internet, sending a letter (by messenger, and later by post) was the only way to communicate with someone who was geographically distant. Even with all our modern technology, letters haven’t become obsolete. Most of us will write many letters during our business life: perhaps including a covering letter to accompany our resume, a letter to be sent to clients, or a thank you letter after an interview or other opportunity. In this article, I’ll take you through the common types of letters that you’re likely to need to write at some point. I’ll offer general and specific advice which should help you if you’re at a loss for words or unsure how to structure a letter. You might want to bookmark this page so that you can refer back to it when you need it! I’ll cover business letters first, then mention some tips for personal letters too. Business Letters The standard format of a business letter varies from country to country, and standards often aren’t set in stone. If you’re not sure how your letter should be laid out, check Daily Writing Tips’ guidelines on How to Format a US Business Letter and How to Format a UK Business Letter. A quick tip if you’re still struggling about layout: look through your correspondence, find a business letter (ideally one from the company that you’re writing to), and use their format as a model. Here are four more points to take into consideration: 1. You should use a simple, standard font such as Arial or Times New Roman for business letters, and a font size of 10-12 pt (depending on the font). Even if your letter is short, don’t use a large font size to increase the space it takes up on the page – this will look unprofessional. This goes especially for writers, who are often tempted to use fancy fonts and layout. 2. You should never handwrite a business letter. However, you may send a very brief handwritten note on a printed compliments slip, in lieu of a letter. 3. For all business letters, you should keep your audience in mind. Don’t use business jargon when you’re writing to customers, for instance. Keep your letters as short as possible – if you need more than a page, consider whether the information might be better delivered in a leaflet or brochure. 4. Always check your spelling and proof-read your letters; if possible, ask someone else in your company to go through them. It’s surprising how mistakes can slip past your eyes: errors can alter your meaning and may confuse or even offend the recipient. Job Applications When writing a letter as part of a job application, remember that it will give the employer their first impression of you. Always: Ensure that you have provided all the information requested. Mention any enclosures (usually your resume and perhaps an application form). Address the letter to â€Å"Mr Smith† or â€Å"Mrs Jones†, rather than using their first name. If you are unsure of the gender of the recipient, use their first name and surname (such as â€Å"Sam Jones†). Here’s an example of the start of an application letter: Dear Mr Smith: Application for the Junior Manager Role, ref: 123A I am writing to apply for the position of Junior Manager, as advertised on your website. Please find my resume enclosed. I believe that I would be an ideal fit for this role, as I meet all of the requirements on the job specification. In particular, my spoken communication skills are outstanding (as you can see from my resume, I captained the debating team at my college). Business Thank You Letters In a business context, thank you letters are often appropriate and expected. When you have attended an interview, it is considered polite to send a thank you note – and it could harm your chances of getting the job if you don’t do this. You might also send a thank you letter when someone has given you their time and advice. In general, you should: Make it very clear that you’re writing to thank the recipient. Mention a specific detail of how they helped you. Express your gratitude for the time or effort they spent. Avoid using the letter just as an excuse to promote yourself (though if you are following up an interview, it’s appropriate to highlight your suitability for the job). An example paragraph from a thank you letter is: Thank you for giving me your time on Friday 18th, when you kindly showed me around the factory. It was fascinating to see how the widgets are manufactured, and I now feel confident that I want to pursue a career in the widget manufacturing field. I’ve attached my resume and wonder if you’d be kind enough to keep it on file, in case any future positions arise that I might be suitable for? Letters of Complaint If you have received poor service or have been dissatisfied with a product, you can write to the company involved to make a complaint. To get the result you want, such as a refund, follow these tips: Explain clearly who you are in relation to the company (eg. â€Å"I am an XYZ customer†). Let them know exactly what you’re complaining about, without using emotional or abusive language. Give specific location, time and date if appropriate. Make it clear what you would like them to do in response. You might also want to include a warning, such as â€Å"If this is not resolved, I will be forced to take my business elsewhere.† Throughout your letter of complaint, your tone should be polite but assertive. Don’t make ridiculous threats or demand an unreasonable compensation – but also don’t be afraid to tell them about the inconvenience or financial loss that you’ve suffered. You can practice writing a letter of complaint here, or use the example below as a model: I recently ordered several party platters of food from your store in Littletown, including one platter of seafood. The food was delivered two hours late, and the seafood platter was missing. I had to spend $40 to purchase extra food at short notice for my party. This was very inconvenient, as I had to drive to the store when I had planned to be with my guests. I have never used your party platter service in the past, and regret to say that I very much doubt I will be doing so again unless you can assure me that this was an isolated incident. Although I was not charged for the seafood platter, I would be grateful for compensation in view of the inconvenience – and cost – of buying replacement food at such short notice. Personal Letters A thoughtful letter from a friend can brighten anyone’s day. Most of us send emails rather than letters nowadays – which means that a letter will really stand out. Even if you’d never normally sit down to write a letter except in a business context, there are a couple of types of personal letter that you’ll want to familiarize yourself with: Letter of Condolence A letter of condolence or letter of sympathy is one which you send to someone who has been bereaved. It can be very difficult to find the right words to say, but taking the time to write a letter or note rather than just sending a â€Å"With Sympathy† card will mean a lot to the recipient. Some tips to bear in mind are: Acknowledge the loss – don’t gloss over it. Express your sympathy. Offer a brief anecdote or recollection of the deceased, mentioning the role s/he played in your life. Mention that your thoughts (and, if appropriate for you and the recipient, your prayers) are with the bereaved and their family. Note that if you’re writing to someone elderly, it’s particularly important to send a handwritten letter. A typed letter will often come across as cold or even rude. All letters of condolence will be unique, but you might like to use this example as a general guide: I was so sorry to hear that John had passed away. My sympathies are with you at this time: I know it must be very difficult for you. John was so good to me when I first came to Littletown – I remember how he welcomed me into your church and made me feel completely at home. I’ll miss him very much. My thoughts and prayers are with you, and with Johnny and Becca. Personal Thank You Letters When someone has given you a gift or done you a particular favor, it’s polite to send them a thank you note or letter. You might do this by email – but you still need to send a separate note to each person, rather than emailing a group of people. Thank you letters are required is in response to wedding gifts. You should send these through the post, and in many cases, you may want to handwrite them. As well as saying â€Å"thank you† for the gift, it’s often nice to acknowledge the particular role that a person played in your wedding – even if that’s just saying â€Å"We were so pleased that you could come and be with us on the day.† Other times when you could send a thank you letter include: For birthday and Christmas gifts. When you’ve stayed as a house guest somewhere (this is sometimes called a â€Å"bread-and-butter letter†). After someone has treated you to a meal, a theater trip, a vacation or similar. To your parents, grandparents or other relatives who have helped you out with a big purchase or a college degree. Your thank you letter doesn’t need to be long. In many cases, a few lines is plenty: Thank you for the gorgeous sweater – just the thing for the cold Canadian winter! I’ll be thinking of you every time I wrap myself up in it. We’re going to be travelling over Christmas, but hope to pop down and see everyone during the new year. Thanks again! If you’re not very confident about your letter writing skills, sending some personal thank you notes is a great way to get started. People are always delighted and touched by being thanked in this way – they’ll overlook any small slips of grammar, and you don’t need to worry too much about lay out and formatting in personal letters. Question d: To determine the weighted average cost of capital that the company should use to evaluate its investment projects, calculate the appropriate measure of: (i) Cost of Debt (ii) Value of Debt (iii) Cost of Equity (iv) Value of Equity (v) Weighted Average Cost of Capital. Round your calculated answer to the nearest whole percentage (i) Cost of Debt calculation. Oz – seafoods has 5$ million current debt and 20 $ million long-term d ebts. The company should consider only long term debt for its investment projects. Cost of these bonds in the project is the rate of return has to be paid to the bond owners. This rate of return is named as Yield for the bond owners, and is the cost of debt for the company. The effective yield is calculated using the formula (Investing Answers): [1+ (r/n)] ^ n – 1; where: r = Normal rate n = number of payment in one year Long term bonds = 20 $ million Average maturity= 10 years. Average coupon rate, r = 10.7 % per annum , Number of payment in one year, (paid half yearly), n = 2 r/n = 0.107 / 2 = 0.0535 (1+0.0535)^2 – 1 = 0.10986 FV = 20,000,000 $ Coupon rate = 10.7 % Coupon PMT = 1,070,000 $ half yearly COMP i = 10.986 % = 11 % = 11 % Oz – seafoods’ economist has predicted an estimated 2 % inflation rate. Where, Rn is nominal rate, Rr is real rate and Ri is inflation rate. k D = k D = 0.02 + 0.11+ 0.11 * 0.02 = 0.1322 = 13.22 % = 13 % Note: 1. The current Yield rate on similar bonds is 9 % per annum. This is 6 % per annum above the government bonds with the same maturity. OZ – seafoods’ economist has predicted an average 7 % p.a. return above the government securities. The calculated value k D = 13 % consider this increase. 2. Oz –
